App for IBS

A hypnotherapy app may ease the symptoms of IBS according to a new study. Patients who used the Nerva app reported a reduction in symptoms, which lasted at least five years.

The findings of the study, presented at the American College of Gastroenterology Annual Scientific Meeting, highlight the potential of using hypnotherapy as a treatment for IBS. However, it is yet to be compared against traditional treatments currently offered to combat the symptoms.

What is IBS?

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), is a chronic condition thought to affect approximately 8 million people across the UK. While symptoms vary, in many cases they prevent patients from carrying out simple daily tasks. The main symptoms include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • A change in bowel habits
  • Mucus in your stools
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Flatulence

You may find the symptoms worsen after eating or going to the toilet. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to get them checked out as they may indicate a more serious problem.

Could hypnotherapy be the cure for IBS?

When looking into treatments for IBS, hypnotherapy isn’t typically something you’d consider. However, according to a 2018 study, it could prove highly effective.

Researchers from the Netherlands based University Medical Centre Utrecht, assessed gut directed hypnotherapy. They discovered that participants who underwent hypnotherapy saw a reduction in their IBS symptoms.

The results of the study are promising, and the creators of the Nerva app claim patients can see a significant improvement within 6 weeks.

So, could hypnotherapy be a cure for IBS? While it does seem to be effective at reducing symptoms, it isn’t a full cure. Not everyone will see the benefits either, with initial studies showing it helped 70% of participants. More research will need to be carried out to determine how effective it really is.

There is no harm in trying hypnotherapy to reduce IBS symptoms. However, seeking professional help is still advised.

What current treatments are available?

Right now, there is no cure that will completely eradicate IBS symptoms. However, there are treatments available that can help to reduce them.

As each patient is different, the treatment of IBS needs to be individually tailored to suit you. Lifestyle changes may be recommended, alongside dietary changes. There are also some medications and probiotics that may help.
